Bluegrass and One Mammoth Cave

 After N'ville we traveled to Mammoth Cave National Park in KY, the Bluegrass State, to meet up with my sisters Sue and Holly. No, I didn't see any grass that was blue but the locals swear I'm not looking at it correctly. Shit, I don't know, isn't grass green?

 Honestly, with Deb's knee replacement a mere 5 weeks ago I thought our prospects of making this meet up were maybe 50-50. But, by God, Deb is a gamer! She is doing so well with her rehab and owes it all to the hard work she's putting in, very proud of her.

My oldest sister Sue, the best big sister a guy could ask for by the way, just purchased a brand spankin new Pleasure Way RV with her fiance Bill and are kicking the boots and cruising! We are on our way to their nuptials in Boston mid June, can't wait. Sue and Bill, we had such an epic time with you guys, love you both! And Bill, thanks for the fine bottle of Woodford Malt Whiskey, very smoove!

My sister Holly and her husband Glen have been traveling in their RV for the past coupla months and it was so good to hang with them at Mammoth. They are really loving the van life and who could blame them, it is a very carefree lifestyle...God bless. Holly and Glen, so happy to see you guys enjoying the freedom of the road and it was very nice to spend some relaxing time with you guys.

Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system on the planet, stretching some 400 miles in length. It is a dry cave as opposed to a wet cave where you see stalagmites and such created from water intrusion. Not so at Mammoth, but you see huge, and I mean huge, underground galleries and openings such that I've never seen before. 

Took a tour of the first 3 miles of the 400 and I pondered what the other 397 miles must be like...ah, the curiosity of the unknown, isn't that what drives the human spirit? What the hell else would inspire you to crawl thru narrow crooks and crannies to see where in the hell this cave goes? For me, I'll wait for the youtube video thank you.

Stayed at the NP campground with my sisters for 2 nights and it was lovely. We all moved on to the Great Smokey NP in TN to meet up with my other sister Amy and her husband Mark, will post on that fine time in a day or so.

Currently in Boone, NC heading to Blacksburg, VA for the weekend...haven't been back to Blacksburg since 1980, should be newsworthy and I WILL find a story or two....stay tuned dear followers,

Howdy from the Peace Garden State - Part 1

 Leaving the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Itasca Lake, MN we continued west towards the MN/North Dakota stateline at Grand Forks(GF), ND about a 2 hour drive. We needed to spend a couple of days in GF to take care of some routine vehicle maintenance for both the LD and the Fit and to stock up the larders, so we wanted a campground close to town to make life easier. The Red River State Park located in East Grand Forks(EGF), MN fit the bill perfectly.  EGF is right next to GF and sits right on the north flowing Red River which forms the border between MN and ND. It was the ideal location for us to take care of our to do list. And...it was much, much more! GF and EGF are both very nice places with interesting history, friendly people and a beautiful Greenway park following both river banks. Minnesota on my Mind

We pulled up stakes at Birch Grove NF campground outside of Washburn, WI and headed west towards Minnesota (MN). After about 90 minutes or so of driving and looking for a brief breakfast repaste, we spy the Perkins Family Restaurant in Superior, WI about two blocks from the MN State line and a suburb of the Duluth, MN metropolis. Over breakfast we scan the MN highway map and decide to head directly west thru the mid section of MN...but this was not to be. We finish up our meal and start our trek thru Duluth and suddenly find ourselves on Highway 61 heading north along the Lake Superior shoreline, not at all in the desired direction of a mid State, westerly drive thru MN, but as it turned out (by happenstance) we were following the most interesting and scenic westerly route thru MN, although somewhat northerly. I'm a Youper, You're a Youper!

Last we talked, we were in lower Michigan and now we find ourselves in the UP, the Upper Peninsula of MI, the home of the Youper's. When MI gained statehood back in the day, they claimed the lower glove (check out a map, lower MI looks like a glove) and the UP as part of their magnificent State, but there was no physical connection between the two due to the Straits of Mackinac seperating Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.  So from way back when, there was always a dream to connect the entire State, the glove of lower MI with their northern brothers, the Youpers (UP'ers). What we need my friends is a legit bridge! And in the late 1950's, they built a magnificent bridge to span the 5 mile wide Straits of Mackinac, marking the delineation between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
